Nine Questions When Evaluating a Circulator For Thermal Control Apps

Posted by Ken Linehan

How valuable are your samples and results to you?  Do youMeCour thermal systems- Circulators really know how to pick a circulator to sustain the correct and required thermal control for your application? When you set the thermostat at 4°C are you positive the sample(s) are maintained at 4°C? Where are the temperature losses in your system?

We may not know everything about assays, applications, sensitive samples, and cells commonly worked with every day in labs, but we do strive to perfect our thermal systems to do and perform to the exact specifications required by folks in the lab. Our job is simple - take your exact specifications and requirements necessary to control the temperature of your application and thus yield the desired and reproducible end results. You increase accuracy and production.

Every week at MéCour we get inquiries for our standard or design specific thermal systems ranging from -100°C to 300°C, and some folks think that picking the circulator is the easiest part. That couldn’t be further from the truth.  Here are nine questions to consider.

  1. Do you incorporate ambient influences?
  2. What’s the thermal mass of the requested thermal block or multiple thermal blocks that make up your system?
  3. When you pick your circulator, are you just looking at the manufacturers’ noted temperature ranges in their catalog?
  4. Ever review what cooling power really exists at a particular temperature setting below ambient?
  5. Do you know how to achieve and sustain that temperature set point and avoid the effect on the application’s outcome?
  6. Do you know the pumping power required, ID of fluid lines and need for lines to be insulated? And not with the Home Depot specials?
  7. How are the above “simple” issues/questions answered?
  8. Do you want to work with a company that knows what you really need and will take the guesswork out of it? Between the four circulator manufacturers we constantly deal with, there are over 300 circulators produced and all with varying degrees of cooling or heating power for high or low temperature applications.
  9. Are you aware that there is no one circulator that fits all applications requiring temperature control?

Working with a thermal control solutions company like MéCour eliminates the guesswork out of designing a thermal control system with the correct circulator to handle the job.

How is your thermal control system operating and what are the results? We’d love to hear from you!
